Ann N. Butenhof recently returned from the Special Needs Alliance Conference www.specialneedsalliance.org “Seas of Change” held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from March 3- 5 2016. The focus of the annual gathering of professionals engaged in advising clients in the area of Special Needs is to exchange information and keep current with the ever-changing legal landscape facing clients dealing with special needs situations. This year the conference focused on many of the complex issues which arise as individuals with an array of disabilities transition from being a child to being an adult, and as parents taking care of such individuals in their own homes age and become frail. Topics included housing options, Title II and SSI work rules, individuals who are “off the grid” (i.e., never plugged into the public benefits system), issues relating to law enforcement and disabilities, and an update on public policy developments.
